Hello JamMan fan! Below are the instructions to duplicate the programming of Phil's MidiWizard as it was originally programmed. I'm not sure that he is still using exactly this programming (e.g., I'm pretty sure he switched the fade time to "short"). It sets the MIDIWizard pedals to send the following signals to the JamMan: 01 = tap-tap 02 = tap-reverse 05 = reset 06 = tap 07 = reverse 08 = mute/restart 09 = fade I have changed my own setup to be as follows: 03 = tap-tap 04 = tap-reverse 05 = reset 06 = tap 07 = mute/restart 08 = fade 09 = reverse This puts the mute/start right next to tap, which makes more sense to me than my original choice. It also leaves the 1st three top row buttons (0, 1, 2) unprogrammed. I sometimes program these to switch between presets on some other effects device on its own MIDI channel. Usage: * Reset, Tap, Reverse: These pedals work just as the corresponding buttons do on the JamMan's own front panel and foot pedals. * Tap-Tap: This sends out *two* taps, one following the other by a tiny fraction of a millisecond. Use this in loop mode at the end of recording a *new* loop; you'll be able to layer on it right away. Alternately, use it in sample mode at the end of recording a *new* sample, and the sample will immediately play back. * Tap-Reverse: This is like hitting the tap button and immediately hitting the reverse button. Use it in sample mode at the end of recording a sample, and the next time you hit Tap the sample will play back in reverse. (You might want to try programming a Tap-reverse-tap pedal if you want to play back a sample in reverse immediately). * Mute/Restart: Hit this while a loop is playing, and the loop stops playing. Hit it again and the loop starts again (from the beginning). This is different from a Reset because it lets you start the loop again later. * Fade: Hit Fade while a loop is playing, and the loop will slowly fade out. Three fade rates are available. Note that Mute/Restart and Fade access capabilities only available via MIDI; they are documented in the manual. There's a useful capability not mentioned in the JamMan manual: If you are looping and have the JamMan recording (overdubbing) when you hit "fade," you'll still be able to record as the loop fades. In this mode the JamMan behaves like a standard digital delay with feedback. If you record a while this way and hit the tap key, it ends the recording and the new loop will keep playing back. This way you can slowly morph one loop into another. A usage tip: If by accident you hit an up or down arrow button during a performance (changing the active bank on the MIDIWizard), you can be really screwed up because none of the other switches will appear to be doing anything (you'll be sending program 15 or 125 when you hit button 5). If you find yourself doing this often enough to be a nuisance, you might want to program duplicates in programs in other banks (e.g. 13-19, and 123-128) so you'll be okay if you accidentally hit the arrow buttons. I taped laminated labels oriented sideways to the left of each button on Phil's MIDIWizard; an accompanying "MIDIWizardLabels.pdf" file will print a page of four sets of labels of the proper size. Print it on self-adhesive paper, and cover it with clear packing tape or laminate. Best of luck with it! Tom Loredo ***Programming the RFX MIDIWizard for the JamMan*** April 2000 Below, an instruction like "PROGRAM -> 05" means use the PROGRAM buttons (up or down) to get "05" in the display. Power up (the unit will be in RUN mode). Enter LEARN (programming) mode: Hold down both PROGRAM buttons until LEARN light is on (about 5 sec). Clear the MIDIWizard by holding down both CHANNEL buttons until "FP" (Factory Program) appears. Wait until "00" appears. Verify you are in 1 - 128 mode: Press MODE (9) button. The numbers "1" and then "128" should appear. If instead "0" and then "127" appears, press MODE again; "1" and then "128" should appear. Change the unit's default MIDI channel to something other than what the JamMan (and any other device you might use it with) is set to. E.g., to set it to channel 16: CHANNEL -> 16 STORE Wait for the display to return to "00". Below, when you complete a programming step with STORE, the program number will appear in the display. Program button 5 to "reset" JamMan: PROGRAM -> 05 MAP -> 01 MPC -> 02 CHANNEL -> 01 STORE Program button 6 to be "tap": PROGRAM -> 06 MAP -> 01 MPC -> 01 CHANNEL -> 01 STORE Program button 1 to be two "taps": PROGRAM -> 01 MAP -> 01 MPC -> 01 CHANNEL -> 01 MAP -> 02 MPC -> 01 CHANNEL -> 01 STORE Program button 7 to be "reverse": PROGRAM -> 07 MAP -> 01 MPC -> 06 CHANNEL -> 01 STORE Program button 2 to be "tap" then "reverse": PROGRAM -> 02 MAP -> 01 MPC -> 01 CHANNEL -> 01 MAP -> 02 MPC -> 06 CHANNEL -> 01 STORE Program button 8 to be "mute/restart": PROGRAM -> 08 MAP -> 01 MPC -> 20 CHANNEL -> 01 STORE Program button 9 to be "medium fade": PROGRAM -> 09 MAP -> 01 MPC -> 10 (or 9 for short, 11 for long) CHANNEL -> 01 STORE Quit LEARN mode by holding both PROGRAM buttons until the unit switches to RUN mode. Make sure you are in bank 0 to use these programs.
