Hi guys,

I got a GHS soundhole mic this morning..

I tried it out a minute ago on my taylor (PUTW stealth ust) , plugging both
into separate channels on my marshall as50r. The mic and stealth (mic
mounted externally) makes for a nice blended sound. the mic adds some low
end and richness. I ran the mic through an art MP studio tube preamp and the
stealth through my usual PADI that's set up for it.

I think I'll like using the mic/stealth together for solo gigs and open mics
and would like to get a reasonable blender for the two signals using a
Y-cable, with a mono out...something portable (I want to take just a pre and
a y-cable to the open mics)...I don't want to haul the amp around every
time..

I know about the raven labs stuff but $299 is a bit much for me right
now...I'm dread shopping :)

are there other choices out there? the mix pro by baggs looks nice but
there's no notch on it..is this a decent unit? If not, maybe there are more
to look at?

any suggestions appreciated..

also, as a side note, does anyone have any suggestions for the GHS mic
placement or mounting? I bent it around to point at the front (headstock
side) of the soundhole. any suggestions on placements or mounting (it does
sort of get in the way of the higher frets on my taylor at the cutaway)
would be appreciated as well...

Thanks,

Chris

I'm still playing around with placement, but so far I think it sounds
about 90% like my guitar..with the other 10% being a colored sound
from my preamps and amp and the mic...and the room sound is not
captured of course..but it is a really good sound. blended with my
ust I think it sounds killer for a plugged-in tone..

Also, I've been testing it outside the guitar, but I found a good
position last night inside the guitar and really reduced feedback. I
pointed it straight back toward the neck, right under the 18th fret or
so. with the 5" gooseneck, you can really dial in the sound you want.

If I have time next week I'll slap some quick sample recordings
together.

Chris

I believe the GHS mic is the old Donnell Miniflex mic; they purchased the line
from him a few years ago. So if you'd like some opinions on it, try
a Google Groups search in this group for "Donnell" and/or "miniflex."

Peace,
Tom

Also, I wanted to add some comments on my experimenting:

IMO, It definelty sounds best mounted externally run through an amp or
speaker that is a least 4-5' behind you. and don't bring it through
the floor monitors..:)

I run it under the heel and clip it on the bottom of the soundhole. I
bend it in a "u" shape and center it between the strings, about 2"
out, bent slightly toward the neck. sounds good and adds some air to
the ust..by itslef it's so-so but blended with the ust it gives a
better blended tone than any internal mic I've heard..but I confess to
only hearing the fishman blender mic and one crown internal mic..

I bought a GHS soundhole mic from FQMS...it didn't ship with the velcro
patches that allow you to attach it to an instrument (the adhesvice doesn't
hurt the finish)..I need 3..

I emailed them to see about getting some patches, they just emailed me
back...

guess how much a pack of (2) approx. 1in x1in patches are?

$12.75! plus a 2-3 week waiting period. plus i'll have to pay shipping
probably..and that's like another $5 or so...so amost $18 for these
things...shit.

this is not a dig on FQMS because I think they have good prices are are just
passing on the cost they have to pay.....

but what in the hell is GHS thinking we are, retarded? I mean sometimes
musical equipment can be outrageous, but this is the craziest thing I've
ever seen...maybe i'm missing something..maybe the adhesive is space age or
something..

I can buy 4-5 packs of (4) 3in x 1in 3M locktight velcro for that amount of
money..of course it's permanent, but still...

anyone else think this is ridiculous? is there another type of pad I can get
that's a little more resonable that won't harm the finish?

maybe i'm over reacting but this shocked me just now..

The problem is all the hands that touch the product before it reachs you plus
GHS has no buying power.

But Doc, this is VELCRO he's talking about here - a tiny square of it. Any
customer-oriented company should send this out for a minimal charge, if any
at all.

I think the hefty price is GHS's way of saying they don't want to deal with
end-users and their petty little problems.

well..I can understand this a little I guess..like I said I don't blame FQMS
becasue they are good about list discounts..

but it's a sad state of affairs when things like this cost that
much...that's as much $$ as 2-3 packs of GHS strings!......they go through
some hands as well I'll bet..

so i'll skip GHS all together and ask this:

Is there a double-sided tape (I can get the matching velcro) or adhesive
that won't harm a guitars finish?

Hi Shag,
we've had many people use our thin pickup mounting tape on lacquer finishes
for years without any problems. It is even more forgiving on polyester,
urethane, or other modern finishes.
Do you have standard Velcro (hook side & furry side), or something tougher
like the snapping type?
We also use some double sided Velcro on our mini-mikes, and can likely find
a suitable adhesive to attach it to some of our double sided tape. Let me
know what you need and we'll send you some.

From a salesman's perspective I agree that it should be little or no charge.
It's really a service issue. Problem is the CFO does not see the goodwill
something like this creates and want's their pound of flesh. Trust I know
their attitudes all too well.
