Any experience with the following: Centaur, Crate, Marshall, the new Roland, Seymour Duncan, etc. I might even consider the high end stuff: Fishman, Daedelus, etc. I own a Breedlove with a Fishman Acoustic Matrix installed. I tried the Trace Elliiott but felt the sound was too electric. Don't know about the others you mentioned, as I haven't tried them. I also own a Crate 125D and like it a lot (I bought it after reading a review a few issues ago in Acoustic Guitar Magazine when there was a review of the different acoustic amps Seymour Duncan's TARA (True Acoustic Response Amplifier) seems to be the standard by which all others are measured ($1,500 retail) whereas the Fishman Acoustic Pro ($2,000 retail) is the ultimate amp. In all cases, you can dial in the sound you want on your amp and bring it to gigs - there you can either play through it or patch in to the house PA system (bringing your desired sound wherever you go) and use the amp as a monitor. Unfortunately the two best amps have been left out of this discussion. The Daedalus speaker cabinet with optional amp/effects units and the JLA (new all tube acoustic amp) are the cream of the crop here. The Fishman has many nice features, like an internal pre-amp with phantom power for condensor mics, but just doesn't sound quite as good as these slightly more expensive units. And don't forget to read between the lines when Acoustic Guitar Mag. called the Centaur a "best buy". Centaur has never advertised with A.G. and was pitted against such ad giants as Trace, Seymour Duncan, etc. IMHO the Centaur simply sounds better than all but the Fishman, Daedalus, and JLA products. And I've had every one here at my shop to A-B, as all the sales reps have come by with "the best acoustic amp ever". NOT! Hope this throws some confusion around this hot topic. Today I got to compare the Crate 125, Trace Acoustic 50, and Marshall. No comparison. The Crate sounded clearly superior to the Trace and Marshall (which had a muddy sound to me). Also considering its lower cost, good power, and excellent features its one to strongly consider. I also played the Centaur at a different shop. It sounded very good although it was set up in a small, very reflecting room so it was hard to assess. But both these amps sounded very good. Also tried the Daedelus. Very high quality sound, but not a big enough difference to justify three times the price. Of those you mention, I tried the Trace, the Crate, and the new Roland AC-100. I bought the Roland a month ago, and I'm extremely h= appy with it. It has a microphone and a guitar channel, 100 watts of precise, clean sound, digital reverb and chorus effects split = into stereo speakers, and several different input and output options. Unfortunately, it weighs 55 pounds, so I mounted casters unde= r it to make it easier to lug around. I use it with my Guild F-512 12-string with active Barcus-Berry under-the-saddle pickup. ======================================================================== These are my opinions, | "There's a thin line between not my employer's! | being committed and being committed" | -- Me, 1987 ========================================================================
